{"id":297,"date":"2007-03-20T15:01:36","date_gmt":"2007-03-20T19:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hippiemommy.com\/2007\/03\/20\/who-is-the-truly-peer-dependent-one\/"},"modified":"2007-03-20T15:01:36","modified_gmt":"2007-03-20T19:01:36","slug":"who-is-the-truly-peer-dependent-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hippiemommy.com\/?p=297","title":{"rendered":"Who is the truly &#8220;peer-dependent&#8221; one?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=hippiemommy-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;asins=0785281754&amp;fc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;lt1=_blank&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;bc1=000000&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;f=ifr\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about this a lot recently as I&#8217;ve become more involved in homeschooling groups.\u00c2\u00a0 As much as homeschoolers like to say that they are proud to raise children who are not peer-dependent, it seems that those at greatest risk of dependency are actually the parents.\u00c2\u00a0 I am currently reading <em>The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook<\/em> and I was pleased to see this exact topic mentioned.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Peer dependency?\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em>If you are an average adult, you are so peer dependent that you&#8217;re scared sick to stand out from the crowd&#8211;your relatives, neighbors, school. and church friends.\u00c2\u00a0 And failure&#8217;s grisly head makes your fears horrific!\u00c2\u00a0 &#8230; Anything but standard practice scares you, unless you see how easily Susie is doing it down the street or realize you&#8217;re destroying your children&#8217;s love for learning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I find this to be so incredibly true in many of my groups.\u00c2\u00a0 There are, of course, those moms who are confident and able to make decisions on their own (the &#8220;Susie&#8221; of the above quote), but there are so many more who are always wanting to jump to where the grass looks greener.\u00c2\u00a0 Why is it so hard to read something that connects with you, see if it works with your kids, and not panic about the fact that other people are doing it differently?\u00c2\u00a0 I know we all want our kids to be successful, but I really believe that if you are <em>consistent<\/em> in any method, <em>and your kids enjoy it<\/em>, then you don&#8217;t need to fear that they will learn.\u00c2\u00a0 In the long-term everyone&#8217;s enjoyment, your attitude, and some kind of consistency seems to be enough to carry you through.\u00c2\u00a0 When I look back on my schooling, I see that what made me do better than the kids around me was the way that my parents encouraged my love to learn.\u00c2\u00a0 There was no magic workbook or curriculum that made me intelligent.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s no such thing.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s my thought for the day, as I read a bunch of moms who are panicked about what curriculum to use for next year.\u00c2\u00a0 If you current curriculum isn&#8217;t working, then of course you should change it, but there&#8217;s no need to switch to classical education because everyone else is&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 If it fits, then great.\u00c2\u00a0 If what you are doing works, then just enjoy it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about this a lot recently as I&#8217;ve become more involved in homeschooling groups.\u00c2\u00a0 As much as homeschoolers like to say that they are proud to raise children who are not peer-dependent, it seems that those at greatest risk of dependency are actually the parents.\u00c2\u00a0 I am currently reading The Successful Homeschool Family [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-297","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-homeschool"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.0 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Who is the truly &quot;peer-dependent&quot; one?
